How Will I Know If I Have a Problem With One of My Teeth?

You have learned how to ignore them, even if they occur in your mouth. How can you tell the difference when a simple toothache is nothing to worry about and when it might be the start of something more serious?

How Bad Is the Pain?


A good rule of thumb to follow is how bad your pain is. In general, most doctors and dentists follow a one to ten pain scale, with one meaning no pain at all and ten meaning the worst pain you have ever had. If we are talking about pain in your mouth, and your pain level is making it difficult for you to eat anything or sleep at night, this means you need to come in and see one of our dentists.

Another factor that may mean you need to see one of our dentists is the number of days you have been in pain. Even if you have minor pain, if it has gone on for a few days, you need to come in and let one of our dentists take a look at your tooth.

Do You Have Other Symptoms?


Sometimes, when you have a tooth that is hurting, there are other symptoms as well. For example, if you have severe tooth pain and swelling on your cheek or gum, this might indicate an infection. If you have pain and you feel a piece of your tooth is missing, you may have cracked or broken your tooth. There are other indications that something might be wrong with one of your teeth, such as whether or not you are running a fever, whether you have jaw pain or a headache, or whether you have pain in only one area of your mouth.
