How Would I Know If I Have a Cracked Tooth?

Perhaps they were biting into a hard piece of candy or a snack, and they discovered a bit of their tooth floating around in their mouths. Sometimes, a cracked tooth can be noticeable and painful immediately, while other cracked teeth are unnoticeable and not painful at all. Here are some warning signs that may signal you have a cracked tooth and you need to come in and see one of our dentists.

How Do Teeth Crack?


The older you are, the more likely you are to crack a tooth because as you age, your teeth lose enamel, which is the protective coating that covers your tooth. The more enamel you lose, the more likely you are to crack a tooth. Also, many people crack their teeth due to an accident or an injury, such as a car accident. If you clench or grind your teeth at night, you can crack your teeth as well because your jaw muscles are very strong.

Symptoms of a Cracked Tooth


Whether you experience symptoms of a cracked tooth depends on how serious the crack is and where it is located. If you happen to crack one of your front teeth, for example, it will be much more noticeable than if you crack one of your back molars. Often, a slight crack in your tooth will look like a line that you cannot brush away.

If you severely crack one of your teeth, you may notice pain in the area because a severely cracked tooth may involve nerve endings. You may also notice swelling around your gums as well.

Treatment for Cracked Teeth


A slight tooth crack is usually repaired with bonding, which is painless and takes almost no time to repair. However, if your tooth is severely cracked, you may need a crown to seal and protect your tooth from further damage.
