Are Dental Crowns Covered by Insurance?

It is only natural to want to know if your insurance covers the cost of getting dental crowns. Dental crowns are covered by dental insurance, but only in some cases. For instance, dental insurance covers dental crowns for health reasons, but coverage is impossible if the procedure is done for cosmetic reasons.

What Your Dental Insurance Typically Covers

The annual maximum coverage cap for dental insurance is between $1,000 and $2,000, depending on your provider and the dental insurance plan. Despite the differences in annual coverage caps, almost every dental insurance plan covers procedures strictly related to health and wellness. By extension, it means that you will hardly find a dental insurance plan that covers cosmetic surgery.

Dental insurance also specifies what services get full coverage. For example, preventative care costs, such as dental sealants, X-rays, and annual cleanings, are fully covered. Other services receive a maximum of 80 percent coverage, including basic services like tooth extractions, dental fillings, and periodontal treatment. Dental insurance then covers only 50 percent of the cost of major dental procedures, including dental crowns, inlays, bridges, and dentures. Dental insurance focuses on preventative and basic dental care.

How Much Coverage You Will Get for Dental Crowns?

Dental insurance typically covers the cost of dental crowns when they are installed for health and wellness-related reasons. These include situations where a tooth is weak or cracked, and the only way to preserve it is by fitting a dental crown. However, coverage is generally not provided if the primary reason for getting a dental crown is cosmetic, such as to improve the appearance of your smile. Procedures that primarily enhance the aesthetics of the teeth and the resulting smile are considered cosmetic.

When covering the cost of dental crowns, insurers also have certain considerations. For example, the cost of the crowns and the resultant coverage depends on the material used by the dentist. Should you need dental crowns or any dental procedure, do not hesitate to contact us.
