CEREC® Dental Crown
Smyrna GA

Dental assistant assisting with CEREC technology at Reich Dental Center in Smyrna, GA
While you may have heard about crowns, chances are CEREC will be a new term to you. At Reich Dental Center, we like to take advantage of new technologies to ensure the best service for our patients. CEREC crowns are a recent dental innovation that cuts down on time needed to place a permanent crown.

Crowns are a long-lasting solution to many dental problems including, broken, chipped, and decayed teeth. They can also be used to cap or hold together a severely damaged tooth. With this restorative treatment, you can have the problem resolved within a single appointment.

How CEREC Crowns Are Made

The acronym stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC). Once our dentist has examined your mouth and discussed options, a CEREC crowning procedure will begin with the use of digital technology. Using computer-aided design (CAD) and computer-aided manufacturing (CAM), the crown can be produced in a matter of minutes as you wait, rather than book a second appointment.

The area of the tooth to be treated is digitally scanned to get precise dimensions. This data is then run through a program that then uses the CAM technology to carve out a customized crown from a ceramic block. Ceramic crowns are an ideal choice because they manage to be both durable and realistic looking. They can be color-matched so that no one need know you had restorative dental work done.

Why Choose CEREC over Traditional Crowns

As already mentioned, time is an important factor with CEREC crowns. Traditional crowns can take 2-3 appointments to conclude on. The speed at which CEREC crowns can be decided upon and permanently fitted is something those with busy schedules often appreciate.

The cost-saving benefit is also admirable. Without additional appointments, the consultation fee is reduced, as is transport costs to the dental clinic. You also get to avoid the cost of a temporary crown that needs to be fitted for the duration, until the permanent crown is ready. With traditional crowns, this permanent crown is made in the lab by a technician, so avoiding this step also means not having to pay for this specialized service. With CEREC crowns, our dentist will be the one to run the program that will lead to the manufacturing of the crown in-office.

The use of digital technology to get an impression of the surface onto which the crown will be fitted is also very helpful. Sometimes the cleaning done to the tooth can make it sensitive and cause discomfort when the putty is used to get an impression. Digital scans are, however, painless and provide less room for error.

The default choice of ceramic material also works well in ensuring a natural appearance to your smile after the procedure. Metal alloy crowns are very noticeable, especially when used in front-facing teeth. Ceramic is a very durable material, so you do not have to worry about coming back any time soon for replacement. They are typically expected to last as long as 5-15 years.
