What You Need to Know About Dry Mouth

Posted on 3/7/2022 by Office
What You Need to Know About Dry MouthDry mouth, also known as xerostomia, is a condition where your salivary glands do not produce a lot of saliva to make your mouth wet. A lot of things like medication can cause this condition, but what is bad about it is that it can affect your oral health. This is because saliva is important in eliminating bacteria and balancing the PH in your mouth. Saliva also contains minerals that can help keep your teeth strong and healthy. The good part is that you can always get treatment for dry mouth to ensure you are in good health.

What Are the Symptoms of Dry Mouth?

If you have a dry mouth, it will come with some side effects, including stickiness in your mouth, bad breath, sticky and stringy saliva, problem chewing, swallowing and speaking, sores in the mouth or tongue, and change of taste. If you also wear dentures, it may be difficult to put them on because there is no saliva to help the dentures slide in your mouth properly.

What Causes Dry Mouth?

There are so many things that can make your mouth dry. One of the most common causes of xerostomia is age. Older people usually experience this problem, probably because of medications, nutrition, or other health issues they may be facing. Another factor is chemotherapy treatment. Cancer drugs can reduce saliva production, leading to dry mouth and other problems. Apart from that, nerve damage and recreational drug use can have an impact on your saliva production. Also, people who smoke and drink alcohol a lot have issues with dry mouth. The problem with dry mouth is that it allows bacteria to multiply in your mouth quickly and affects your teeth and gums.

What Should I Do About It?

If you have a dry mouth, you should use a lot of fluids, but if they do not work, seek help from our experts to have the problem fixed immediately. We are always here to help.
