Everything You Need to Know About Geographic Tongue

Posted on 3/21/2022 by Office
Everything You Need to Know About Geographic TongueGeographic tongue is a harmless, inflammatory condition that is visible on the surface of the tongue.

Normally, our tongue is covered with small, pink or white bumps which are called papillae. Papillae appear as small, pinkish-white bumps which are actually short, hairlike organs. In geographic tongue, some patches of the tongue dont have papillae and hence, seem like smooth, pink islands that have slightly elevated borders.

Is There Anything to Be Worried About?

Even though geographic tongue may look alarming, it does not mean you have health problems and definitely does not mean that you will be diagnosed with infection or cancer. The only thing geographic tongue may cause is tongue discomfort or an increased sensitivity to some substance such as salt, spices or perhaps, sweets.

Common Geographic Tongue Symptoms

Common symptoms of geographic tongue include

•  Smooth, irregular shaped, pinkish-red patches on the top of your tongue.
•  A burning sensation, pain, or general discomfort while eating acidic or spicy foods.
•  Frequent shifts in the shape, size, and location of lesions.

All cases of geographic tongue are unique and may continue for several days, months, or even years. Commonly, this problem resolves on its own and may even appear again.

When Should You See a Dentist

Geographic tongue is an entirely benign condition, however, it is natural to feel anxiety after seeing the legions appear on your tongue. If you develop the symptoms of geographic tongue, there is absolutely nothing to be worried about. However, there are other serious conditions that produce the same lesions on the tongue.

If the lesions on your tongue remain unchanged and you can't bear the discomfort, call us at 770-435-5450 to schedule an appointment or to discuss possible remedies.
