Restoring Your Oral pH is Essential to Avoiding Acid Erosion DamageOral pH is essential to our dental health. The pH determines the alkalinity or acidity of a substance. Normally, the pH level of saliva is between 6.7 and 7.4, making it relatively neutral. Any alteration in the oral pH can have severe implications on your dental health. One of the impacts of altered oral pH is acid erosion damage.

Oral pH and Acid Erosion


Acidic saliva can damage the teeth' enamel. Even though tooth enamel is the hardest part of your body, acidic saliva can damage its components extensively. In many cases, when the oral pH drops below 5.4, the tooth enamel starts breaking down. Given that the tooth enamel cannot grow back, the damage is usually permanent. Similarly, if acids have eroded your teeth, they are more likely to be sensitive and will have a yellow discoloration. Therefore, you will feel uncomfortable when drinking cold or hot beverages due to the sensitivity.

Extensive enamel erosion can lead to cavities; these are small holes on the teeth' surface. The enamel protects teeth from bacterial attacks. When it erodes, bacteria find not resistance in attacking your teeth with acid, causing the holes. The more your teeth are exposed to acidic saliva, the more likely you are to develop cavities.
