Is a Glass Filling a Good Option for You?

Is a Glass Filling a Good Option for You?Dental restoration, also known as a dental filling, is a dental procedure acquired by most people at least once or twice in their lifetime. There are various types of filling materials, including amalgam, resin composites and glass ionomer cements. A glass filling is tooth-colored, just like composite fillings. Like most fillings, they are used if you have tooth decay, erosion and other cavities in your tooth. Glass fillings have numerous advantages that make it an excellent option for you to explore.

They Are Great for Patients With a High Rate of Tooth Decay

Since glass fillings release fluoride ions, they can prevent any future cavities along their edges. The fluoride ions make them great for patients who have a high risk of cavities and often have rampant ones due to high sugar consumption. Glass fillings are specifically excellent if you are looking for your child a filling option.

Glass Fillings Chemically Bond With Teeth

Glass ionomers are the only dental filling material that chemically bonds to the tooth structure. All the other materials bond physically. For materials with physical bonds, we, the dentists, have to prepare the surface with priming, bonding, and etching with several materials. The materials will eventually also give a very strong interlocking physical bond. However, the physical bond can never be as strong as the chemical bond formed by glass fillings.

Glass Fillings Heal Caries Lesions

As much as glass fillings are perfect as a cement, there are also used in specific instances like healing caries lesions. Glass fillings, when placed strategically, provide a constant fluoride supply. The glass fillings will provide restorative needs due to the uptake of fluoride by dentin and enamel. Fluoride ions bond so well with dentin that glass fillings are safe to place where blood contamination and moisture are concerned.
