How Often Is Changing Your Toothbrush Advised?

How Often Is Changing Your Toothbrush Advised? Many of our patients wonder about when it is best to switch out their toothbrushes. That is a good question, as brushing with a well-worn toothbrush can hurt your soft tissues and prove to be ineffective. We offer suggestions below about changing out your toothbrush as well as its use and care.

When Should I Switch Out My Toothbrush?

We suggest switching out your toothbrush every 3 months, or before that time if your toothbrush looks frayed or worn. Don't use a toothbrush with bristles that are not in alignment, as it really will not support your dental care needs. Make it a habit to buy a new toothbrush after three months, or when it does not look like the same brush you bought when it was new. You should switch out the head of your electric toothbrush, if you use one, every three months too.

What Is the Best Kind of Toothbrush?

If you use a manual toothbrush, choose one that is soft or extra soft, so you can protect your gums and navigate more easily along the gum line. Because bacteria and plaque settle along the gum line, it is important to pinpoint this area when you brush your teeth. Make sure you also use a brush that will clean your surface teeth well and can be maneuvered to the back of the mouth. If the brush head is too large, you may have problems along these lines. A smaller toothbrush head is normally a better choice. If you use an electric toothbrush, choose one that is round, oscillates, and is soft. It should be endorsed for use by the American Dental Association or ADA.

You should also consult with our office twice a year and arrange appointments for professional cleanings and exams. Keep on top of your dental health by changing your toothbrush when it needs switching and visiting our office regularly. Why not give us a call today for a cleaning and exam?
