 The choice to get a dental crown is not as simple as saying “yes” or “no.” Once you do decide that it's time for a crown, you still have to determine which type of crown you want. There are several types of dental crown, each with its own pros and cons. Knowing each one will help you to decide which one suits your needs. Types of Dental CrownsThe first type of crown is one made of a porcelain outer section which is fused to a metal base. This looks more natural than an all metal crown, but at times the dark metal beneath the porcelain can show through. The next type is an all metal crown. These crowns are extremely durable, and are able to withstand the stresses of everyday use. Because they are not inconspicuous, they are usually best to use on the molars. A less expensive type of crown is an all resin crown. The drawback to this type of crown is that it will wear down over time, and you will have to have it replaced. A popular type of crown is the all porcelain or all ceramic crown. These crowns can be tinted to match the color of the surrounding teeth, and are a good choice for incisors and canines, since they will be seen easily. Finally, the last type is a pressed-ceramic crown. This crown combines a hardened inner core with a porcelain cap. They last longer than a regular porcelain crown and can be used on the front teeth. Which One is Best?The one that is best for you will depend on what you are looking for. If you want a crown that is more durable than anything else, a metal crown is your best bet.
