Dental Inlays and Onlays

Dental Inlays and OnlaysIt is likely that if you are reading this, your dentist has approached you and said that you require either dental onlays or inlays. If you have never encountered this before, you might not know the difference between the two. I recommend that you learn as much as you can about dental treatment before undergoing it to make an informed decision.

Dental Inlays


Inlays are custom-made, tooth-shaped pieces of material that are used by dentists to replace lost tooth surfaces. Inlays are simple to place, with the tooth being prepped and cleaned first, then the inlay being fused or glued to. There is no need for cutting or grinding because they simply fit over your existing teeth. It can be fastened either during the same visit as the implant or in a dental lab. Although they can last up to 30 years, inlays typically last for 15 years. Longevity will increase with an initial investment that is a little higher. Inlays made of metal, gold, or porcelain are created in a lab. The most expensive and long-lasting inlays are ceramic ones. Although gold inlays are more costly, they last longer than porcelain inlays. Metal inlays are substantially less expensive than porcelain and gold inlays, which makes them a viable alternative for those who cannot afford porcelain or gold inlays.

Dental Onlays


Dental inlays and onlays are similar, however onlays are larger and created differently. Onlays, unlike inlays, also completely encase the tooth. Dental onlays cover a tooth's biting edge and cusps. When the region is too damaged for a filling, the dentist will frequently choose an onlay instead. Onlays might be considered the first step before considering more intrusive operations. Onlays and inlays are prepared similarly. A temporary onlay is usually utilized until an onlay that fits your tooth can be created. Partial crowns are another name for onlays. Onlays last less time than inlays since it is harder to connect them to teeth. Onlays often last 10–15 years. Their lifespan may be increased by keeping and caring for them. Onlays can be made from porcelain, composite, resin, or gold.
